Schneider Tele-Xena 135mm f/4.0

2014-07-03
This is an unusually small 135mm.   It is is DKL mount and it can be converted from DKL to K-mount or m42 mounts.   Be warned that I have tried three similar adapters and only have one working.  The worse thing is they all look alike generic brands.

The lens has a very long minimal focusing distance of 4 meters.  If it has something more reasonable as in 2 meters, I would have kept this lens.  It is well built with good sharpness and color.  Filter size is 58mm and it is easy to find a matching tele lens hood.

Schnieder 135mm f/3.5

I got a schneider 135mm f/3.5 on a m42 mount and I got it as a gift from my eldest brother about 25 years ago when he gave me a Praktica film camera. I simply forgot that I had this schneider 135mm, a Pentacon 50mm f/1.8 and a Praktica 28-70 zoom tucked away in my old camera bag with Praktica MTL5 SLR camera. They are  m42 lens sharing the same screw mount  usedin Pentax. I tried the Pentacon which is quite awesome except the metering in Av mode needing Ev+1.7Ev compensation. And last weekend, I tried my Schneider 135mm f/3.5, and here are snapshots around my neighbor's fence and red leaves.

I am very lucky to have this lens. The lens is a shear beauty to use and to look at, a very unique antique like with shape and stiff focusing ring that I find it a challenge to use but I am in awe with
the lens. Mistakes on focusing is all mine, and I can't wait to use it in better framing and better subject of a picture instead of snapshotting without a purpose.

Initial Impressions & Notes:
  • Lens is well constructed with metal body
  • A rare lens made by Schneider Kreuznach from Germany
  • My oldest lens in my gear
  • Color and contrast are oustanding and the lens is very sharp in wide open aperture
  • Trap focus actually works in this manual M42 lens.  I am very surprised as normally, trap focus is lost with M42 lens.
  • Filter thread is 49mm and I manage to get some decent close up with the Cosina 1:1 Macro adapter
  • This lens is a rare find for 135mm in M42 mount, made by Germany
  • I would classify this lens as antique
