Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 in Wedding

2008-12-01
I find Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 very dependable and I would use it again for wedding.

Though it is not as wide as 16mm, but the range is very useful to cover the wedding, portraits, candid, and close up. It has in between 1:3 to 1:4 close up magnification. I would prefer this lens as a single lens when compared to 16-50 or other variants. Its strength is on its sharpness, very reasonable bokeh and it is quite sharp in my books for wide open shots. I pretend to be a wedding photog in my friends' wedding using Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 along with Komine 135mm f/2.8 1:2 Macro & Pentax FA 50mm f/1.4

The good copy of DA* 16-50 would be a better lens. But if I have to pick one lens to cover a broader range, I would pick the Tamron zoom again. If your emphasis is on group shot versus portraits, then I would pick the DA* 16-50 over the Tamron.

The firework pictures were taken with my Pentax K10D and Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. I seldom use tripod and I paid the price in not knowing my tripod's function well and I ended up forgetting turning SR off and I manually clicked all those firework shots without an IR remote. I rushed to the firework scene unplanned and the road close put me in an unfamiliar place but a good high point on a bridge overlooking the water and the firework, I am lucky to make some shots.

Besides SR mistakes, I might have used wrong settings such as ISO 400 on a tripod, Av on f/4.0-5.6 that result in about 1/3 to 2 sec shutter. I tried some shots in f/11 in iso 100/200 and that leave the shutter to 6+ seconds making the boats totally blurry in the motion. Perhaps, the SR probably overcompensated the shot taken with tripod. I have all sorts of errors yet to be remembered for next firework scene. I have to find an IR remote and learn to frame my shot, and learn to use my tripod properly.

A couple of test shots with Valentine flower and my boys. These are all taken in f/2.8 and post processed in Picasa with Filtered B&W. I have set wrong on +2 on saturation on bright mode

Wesley with K100D and Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 With few snapshots taken, I find the lens quite sharp wide open comparing to my Pentax SMC FA 28-105 f/3.2-4.5. I like the lens for the sharpness and color but I find it a bit heavy for walk around and frequent use. Perhaps, I need sometime to get adjusted to the heavier weight.

Impressions & Notes:
  • This quality zoom has taken me a while to truly appreciate its quality. I initially had some whining on its heavier weight compared to my other zoom lens in that focal range
  • Lens at wide open aperture has sharp images
  • Bokeh is pretty decent and some images in f/2.8 match that with my prime with Pentax FA 50 f/1.4
  • Color has tendency to go warmer than my liking. I am not sure if it is my white balance. A couple of shootings result in warmer images in portraits that I turn to black & white instead
  • I find the lens better suited for Portraits and I like it very much in shooting fireworks
  • Close focus is capable although the magnification is stated around 1:3.9. I find the lens quite good for indoor product shots. A lot of my product shots for trimming lens are done with this lens.
  • Though 28mm is not wide after the digital crop, I find the focal range better suited for my casual walk around, more so than the kit's focal range of 18-55
  • Pictures tried on films seem to have a bit overexposures. Maybe an isolated shooting instance.
  • A highly recommended quality zoom for a budget that covers the good range of 28, 50, and 75mm.
