Access P-MC 70-210mm f/3.5 Macro in R/K mount

Access P-MC 70-210mm f/3.5 Macro in R/K mount
I got this lens in a package of used Ricoh xr-p body. Access P-MC 70-210mm f/3.5 Macro in R/K mount, Ricoh PinIt is in Ricoh R/K mount that works in (P) programmed mode in Ricoh xr series of camera. It has the notorious Ricoh pin that can jam a digital Pentax bodies. Though the Ricoh pin is retractable, it does stick out too much and will jam onto the AF/MF connector on the Pentax bodies. It will work like a K mount lens on a non-AF Pentax film bodies.

It is quite easy to remove the pin and the zoom lens will just work like a regular manual K mount lens. I use it in M mode Access P-MC 70-210mm f/3.5 Macro in R/K mount, Ricoh Pinand do stop-down metering with the green button on K20D. In Pentax K-x body in M mode, (+/-) Av button acts like the green button with a easier access location.

The lens looks almost identical to the Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm f/3.5 by Tokina, the version 2 in the first three versions recommended by Mark Roberts. The filter size 62mm, the lens barrel, and the weight looks like the same lens to me

I test it out with Pentax K-x and performance closely resembles what I like about the Tokina Series 1 zoom.

Impressions & Notes
  • It is quite good in sharpness
  • Constant f/3.5 throughout the zoom
  • Contrast can be better if a hood is added
  • Close up is about 1:4 but I have not confirmed
  • No zoom creep, 1-touch zoom, 62mm filter size, zoom quite easy to handle, good for MF
  • Lens is small and lightweight as compared to v1 and v3 of Vivitar Series 1 zooms made by Kiron and Komine
  • Good control of CA/PF in short experience with the zoom

Rikenon P 35mm f/2.8 and Pentax K-x

2010-02-16
Rikenon P 35mm /2.8 in R/K mountI got this Rikenon lens that came with Ricoh xr-p as a package. I got carried away with my excitement on 35mm film camera with Ricoh xr-p that I bidded up two other similar bodies that I was supposed to gift to friend. Long story short, I have got two dead bodies on Ricoh xr-p film body and both have similar shutter problems.

I tried out the this lens on Pentax K-x White. The lens has Ricoh P pin and the aperture ring has the P selection for programmed mode in Ricoh xr series of cameras. The lens works fine on Pentax digital bodies without any pin stuck issue as I have explained in my earlier post about Rioch P pin

Safe if
  • P pin tip is found a rounded ball-head type
  • P pin is small and that when you use your thumb to glide over the pin, you don't feel it sticking out upon pressing it down
  • P pin is found retractable

When mounted on Pentax K-x, it works as a Pentax K manual lens. I have to use green button for stop-down metering. There is the undocumented observation about K-x in working with green button on K lens, it has an extra mirror slap that goes with stop-down metering operation. So far, I have not found a clue why the mirror slap is required in the metering.

In actual use, the extra noise does bother me a bit as every green button will have the extra noise on the mirror slapping. I ran few test shots on the lens with stop-down metering, they are not too bad. The lens is all plastic but I find it resemble closely the lens from Cosina.

Ricoh Pin and Ricoh R/K mount

2009-12-15
When pin sticks out too long
Jamming is more likely to occur

I have a Cosina 24mm f/2.8 with 'A' setting and with a P/K-AR mount that can be used in both Pentax K mount with 'A' aperture or the Ricoh camera such as Ricoh xr-p that has multi-programmed mode. If Ricoh pin is found to be long as seen on this picture, you should be concerned and be alerted with pin jamming problems. Not all Ricoh pin will jam but those that stick out long enough as the above picture will jam on the AF/MF connector on Pentax bodies that have AF and MF switch.

On my Cosina 24mm f/2.8 or some versions of Sigma 24mm f/2.8 ultra-wide lens rear mount, you should see two golden contacts, one on the far end is the Ricoh pin where one along with the electrical contacts is probably for the A metering contact in Pentax K-mount. Your lens can be used in both Pentax KA mount in 'A' setting. And it beats the others with an addition of 'P' with a Ricoh pin that allows you to use the special Ricoh programmed (or multi-programmed) mode in Ricoh xr, xr-p, kr-20sp, kr-30sp and any other Ricoh cameras with P settings. The Vivitar/Cosina 24mm f/2.8 in P/K-AR mount is found safe with Pentax bodies as the pin is small and retractable

The reason why some (not all) Ricoh lens with P pin may get stuck half-way is that the pin can get stuck onto the AF/MF switch on digital and AF film bodies. Once it gets stuck and it will appear that you can't slide it further, try gentle wiggle as the first step to overcome a stuck pin. The one possible and quick resort is to switch AF/MF switch on digital body to push the pin out and slide the lens further to lock in the properly mounted position. If your Ricoh lens has the P/K-AR mount signature, it is likely to work in both Pentax K-A and that in Ricoh P cameras that have special default Program (P), Programmed Action (PA) and Program DOF preferred (PD) modes such as those available in Ricoh xr-p.

A ricoh R-K lens without the Pentax A, the designated P setting is for Ricoh Programmed mode, the equivalent of Pentax A but the P setting can't be used as 'A' on Pentax K body, those Rioch only R/K lens can only be used stopped down in digital K-bodies.

And for those Ricoh or Rikenon lens that are pre-dated the xr-p time without the support of Programmed mode, those Ricoh lenses are more likely to share the same K-mount as Pentax.

Impressions & Notes:
  • Not all R/K mount with Ricoh pin will get lens stuck. Even when the Ricoh pin is found retractable and that it is a ball head type of pin as shown in this blog post, it really depends on how long it sticks out.

  • For K-mount bodies without auto focus, likely a Pentax film body such as Pentax SuperProgram, the ricoh pin will not be an issue as the jamming happens on the hole that corresponds to the AF/MF switch connector.

  • For digital bodies, the pin may get stuck in AF/MF pin position on the KAF2 crippled mount on digital body.

  • Usually a gentle wiggle will free the pin and you can slide the Ricoh lens all the way to mount properly

  • A quick and effective resolution if the pin is really stuck is to switch AF/MF switch on digital body and a wiggle on the mount so that the pushing up of AF/MF pin from the digital bodies have a chance to push the retractable Ricoh pin out

  • Ricoh/Riknenon lens that are pre-dated the time of Ricoh xr-p should not have this Ricoh pin and should be safe to be used as a regular K-mount lens.

  • For those lenses that have P/K-AR mount type, they usually have two golden contacts, one around the electrical contacts for the 'A' aperture passing and the other is the Ricoh P pin that is used to communicate with Ricoh xr-p in P (default programmed mode), PA (Programmed Action mode) for action shots, PD (programmed Depth preference mode) for scenery shot.

  • For Ricoh R/K lens, those can be used like a K-mount lens in a film body. In digital bodies, Av mode can't be used as those R-K lens don't have the contacts for 'A' aperture communication but they can be used with stop-down metering.

Update:
  • I have found that the Access zooms that I have do have retractable pin but the pin sticks out longer and I found them jamming in my K-x.

  • A careful wiggle frees the lens from the jamming

  • For those bigger P pin, one has to perform modification in either removing the pin or use a file or some other means to shorten down the pin.

Vivitar 24mm f/2.8 PK-A/R (99032042)

Vivitar 24mm f/2.8 PK-A/R 99033042Vivitar 24mm f/2.8 PK-A/R 99033042I have purchased this Vivitar plastic lens for a while. From this website, it looks like a lens made from Cosina although I am not sure.
I purchased this very cheaply in a bundle with a Pentax P5 film camera and it turns out to be a gem in my gear. It is one of my prime that I used frequently for night time street photography and landscape shots. Though the lens is not well built in construction, it is all plastic and light weight. But pictures taken with my Pentax K100D are great with the lens. Lens flare and ghosting are seen in shooting into the sun light and harsh lighting at night. And I am yet to find a lens hood.

My impressions:
  • Very inexpensive for wide angle prime at 24mm
  • It has the 'A' setting on aperture which is a big bonus for me for manual lens
  • Focus ring is half turn and it is great for manual focusing
  • Lens flare are seen in shots taken with this lens without a lens hood. I need to add a compatible wide lens hood for 52mm size.
  • Quite sharp wide open at f/2.8
  • Very light and compact for walk around and street photography
  • Filter size is 52mm
  • The PK-A/R mount doesn't have the protruding pin like some of the Ricoh lens
