Hin's Past Gear -- LBA/CBA shameful

2010-01-15
shameful reflection of Hin
This is a shameful reflection of my past gear that I have accumulated and sold in the past. I get the list so long that I find it a drag to update the blog post in Hin's Camera Gear and I am in the process of trimming lens again and this blog post will serve as the permanent home for my lens and cameras in the past.

Pentax MX with a Red Pentax Strap

2009-12-17
Pentax MX with red pentax strapI get inspired by my forum buddy to go off to research in fixing the light seals problems with my Pentax MX . I like the film camera especially when I scourge and get the very red Pentax strap to go with it just for the show. The strap is not comfortable but it adds character to the camera. I love it!

Here are Jon Goodman's instructions for sealing multiple kinds of cameras:

Here is the link to Goodman's eBay store where he sells seal kits:

Contact him directly via eBay for kits not listed.
Steve

(In case you are wondering...Mr. Goodman is sort of a legend in regards to seal replacement on old cameras.)

Much thanks to Steve and many others for the link. What concerns me most is the mirror box bumper as I don't want to get any glue and deposit to ruin the MX focusing screen.

I am fortunate that the focusing screen is removable, I will go two routes for the fixing:

  1. I will contact a local repair shop and ask for the pricing of a CLA with light seal.
  2. Do It myself as an alternative if pricing is over the cost of the camera.
And I will hopefully have a workable MX in the new year. I will report back

Pentax K-x White Just Arrived

2009-11-29
pentax k-x white
I just got my white K-x. I prefer to pick up red on the hand grip but I don't want to wait and special order from Japan

pentax k-x white test shots

The white K-x is beautiful as others have noted. I am a bit weary of the build material with light plastic as I get used to the sturdy material as in the K20D, K10D and I don't think it matches the build material as in the K100D that I had. More use will tell. The LCD is very useful with the latest update on the screen user interface and I don't seem to mind the missing of red dot in focusing and the top LCD. Test pictures come out decent even for the DA-L 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6

The missing of the top display or single dial don't bother me much as the LCD is much improved. The missing of red dot in focusing will be a problem if one relies on it for precision such as macro and tele shot. But in general shooting as in street scenes, I am fine without the focal point indicator as long as I stick to single center point.

Why I Love Pentax

The Pentax Way by Herbert KeplerThe Pentax Way by Herbert Kepler

It has been a joyful journey ever since I upgraded from a point and shoot camera to Pentax K100D in the year of 2007, and subsequently I got K10D, and now K20D. With Pentax system, I also get obsessed with film gear in trying out the oldie cameras as in Spotomatic, ME Super, SuperProgram, PZ-1 and now Pentax 645N. The terms in Lens Buying Addiction (LBA) and Camera Buying Addiction (CBA) are exclusively live and pandemic in the Pentaxian community.

New & Old

I chose Pentax for few simple reasons:
  • Best ergonomics

  • Best value

  • Backward compatibility

  • Best community in Pentax Users

  • Best in History as evidenced in Herbert Kepler

When I jumped from a simple point and shoot with Fuji F30, I asked myself the very question that I ask myself daily -- do you want to be just like others? And I chose to be different and be interesting with my dSLR journey. And the choice was clear in selecting Pentax K100D as it was the best at the time for an entry level camera with Shake Reduction (SR) built into the digital bodies. Every freaking inexpensive lens that I bought, be it an old m42 lens or a third party Sigma, Tamron, Tokina or the like, I will have the SR feature at my disposal to capture the special moment without worrying about the VR or IS labels on the lens.

It is always tempting to see what is offered in other systems but what kept me a loyalist in Pentax is the great offering in prime lenses that are small, lightweight and excellent in image quality. With the advance of newer Pentax bodies, I see great success in the making.

I pride myself and the blogs that I author and I ask my readers to ponder the very question if they like to be different and unique in their choices they make to capture their souls in photography

"Why am I different from others?" asked the deaf teenage girl.

"Why ... do you have to be like others?" replied the old man.

"Music is a visible thing," said the old man.

"Close your eyes. You will see." said the old man.

Pentax 645N Product Shots with Pentax DA 35mm f/2.8 macro limited

2009-09-03
pentax 645n product shots with pentax da 35mm f/2.8 1:1 macro limitedI don't think I can justify in buying this used camera. I thought for a long time about going back to film on b&w. I got myself interested with that nostalgic feeling on film where I started with a 35mm with Praktica MTL5 roaming around the streets of Macau and had my first roll of film on a 35mm SLR camera. I am always fascinated with b&w film. Though it is much easier and perhaps economical to shoot digital, the b&w is never the same in digital as in film. And what troubles have I got myself into: another gear that may turn out to be infrequently used. That is not my first time. It happened before and it will happen again. I buy, try it, feel guilty and sell the film camera and go back to digital. I am hopeful that the experience will get me into learning mood once again. I consider the money well spent if I manage to reinvent my interest into b&w instead of doing the digital conversion in software.

pentax 645n product shots with pentax da 35mm f/2.8 1:1 macro limited Have I learned a thing or two about myself? I am always silly. Sometime I enjoy the past as much as I enjoy the present. I don't necessary go for the latest and I treasure some oddies that work charmingly. This is a medium format camera and I know very little about.

I feel more adventurous in buying the Pentax 645N than getting the Pentax K-7. Is this a logical and rational step? Hell no!

When I first met this macho medium format camera, I go wow and that hunk of boxy body appeals to me in a unique way though it is not much bigger and heavier than the Pentax K20D. I would not go into detail measuring the weight and size for comparison as I find it very reasonable to handle. Why look at the figures that scare myself to enjoy the ride. The shutter noise is a bit of disappointment when I first tried it. I first thought of something similar to Pentax Pz-1 where the noise is loud but sweet in a sense of well dampened mechanically.

This baby takes 6 AA batteries and the cartridge is at least 2 to 3 times of a roll of 35mm film. It looks like a big part of the body once I place the cartridge into the 645N body from the back.

Pentax releases the news about a limited edition of white camera with K2000 and K-M entry models. While it is in the entry level cameras as compared to the Pentax K20D, I consider it a very interesting and exciting news, and perhaps a bold move from Pentax.

Many Pentaxian are not impressed with the new release and discuss about it as the most hideous and dumbest things from Pentax. They even went on to create poll asking how other Pentax users think about it. I don't share the views of those negative comments, and I am happy to be in the camp embracing the bold move from Pentax.

I am more open to new ideas and something for a difference. Whether it is the right move for the Pentax development, it is yet to be seen. I am excited about the color. Beauty is really in the beholder's eyes. White can be beautiful and I don't realize that I have many white things in my household from laptop to my car. And my beloved home is also in white color.

Posting Angelic Face in my Blog

And I still insists that white is not my favorite color. Green is! But I will stay away from a Green Camera. I look forward to the release and I am pursuing the thoughts of having K2000D as my 2nd body in white color. How boring it is to have two cameras that are look alike. Instead of having a 2nd body as in Nikon D90 or a Pentax K10D besides my main camera with Pentax K20D, I want my 2nd system to be smaller for traveling and share with my wife and kids for self portrait in outing. I scrap my plan with Nikon D90 the day this news come out.

I will be anxiously looking forward to the release of the white camera.
